Prognosis can depend on how soon someone receives treatment for psychotic depression.

A large number of individuals (41%) had their diagnosis changed to bipolar disorder or schizoaffective disorder.

Researchers suggest that psychotic depression is understudied, underdiagnosed, and undertreated.
