Golden syrup an Aussie/UK syrup used in baking, such asAnzac Biscuits.
Its not widely available outside of Australia/NZ/UK though here it is onAmazon.com($3.63 for a can).
Dark corn syrup (this is ideal), honey or maple syrup.

The other nice thing about this pudding is that its not too sweet.
