Causes of Fidgeting

One common feature of ADHD is strongdelay aversion.

The time spent waiting for something to happen without anything to do can be excruciating.

Take studying as an example.

You might as well be in one of thosesensory deprivation chambers.

Its essentially a self-regulating mechanism.

It also shouldnt interfere with your ability to do the task.

But it can also be used to enhance the focus benefits of fidgeting.

Listening tomusic, for example, can help.

You dont want to improve your focus at the expense of taking away another persons ability to focus.

Ordinarily, that makes them way too unstimulating to do on their own.

I have an especially hard time with listening.

Thats useful for those who find themselves getting bored with other fidgeting techniques.

As the effects wear off, the fidgeting is no longer enough to keep me focused on the task.

A great example of that is knitting.

Its a simple, repetitive motion you’ve got the option to do to keep your hands busy.

And, in the end, youll have a new blanket or hat to show for it!

Knitting is also a great hobby for ADHD fidgeting because it doesn’t have to be redundant.

Research shows that aerobic exercise, or anything that gets your heart pumping, can improve focus andreduce hyperactivity.

(Of course, hyperactivity and attention regulation differences are not inherently “bad.”

For instance, try cleaning the house or taking a walk.

Any bang out of movement, however that feels good to you, is beneficial.
